Firstly, what is Shopify’s pricing? What’s the total cost to own a Shopify store?

Well, a Shopify subscription with the default online store builder is just $39 USD per month, but there are also other costs to consider. The $39 is just for keeping your store up and live; if customers purchase something from your online store, you’ll have to pay a Shopify Payments fee and a transaction fee.

01. Shopify Fees Calculator

Shopify plan pricing

• Basic plan: $39/ month

• Shopify plan: $109/month

• Advanced plan: $399/ month

The Shopify calculator gives you a monthly estimation of your Shopify cost based on your average order value (AOV), your number of orders per month and your Shopify payment plan.

Let’s use my store as an example:

• AOV: $50 USD
• 100 orders per month
• Shopify Payments is used

We get the following result for this store. The total cost for each Shopify plan will be:

• Basic Shopify plan: $204
• Shopify: $239
• Advanced Shopify: $449

02. Shopify Payments explained

When you finish building your Shopify online store, you’ll need to connect to the payment gateway. Shopify has a feature called the Shopify Payments gateway, which accepts most popular payment methods such as VISA, Master Card, American Express, Apple Pay, Google Pay and others. However, the Shopify Payments gateway is available only in certain countries; if your store is registered in one of the countries below, rest assured you’ll have access to Shopify Payments.

03. Shopify Transaction Fee Explained

Below is the screenshot of the Shopify pricing table. Let me explain the 3 rows you see.

• Online credit card rates: If your customer purchases a product from your online store, this rate will be applied.
• In-person credit card rates: If you sell offline, this rate will be applied.
• Additional fees: You have your choice of payment gateway, but if you use one other than Shopify Payments, such as PayPal, you’ll have to pay both a PayPal fee and a Shopify fee.

Depending on your Shopify plan, whether it’s Basic Shopify, Shopify or Advanced Shopify, the Shopify transaction fee is different.

04. Why Do You Have To Pay a Shopify Transaction fee?

On Shopify’s pricing table, you may notice that there is a feature called ‘fraud analysis’ included in all Shopify plans. This means that when an order has been completed, you can rest assured that the transaction has been cleared and there is a genuine customer at the other end.

If your store is registered in countries outside the U.S, the charge will be in USD anyway. So, what if you register your store in the UK? We’ll use xe.com to figure out the monthly Shopify plan cost in British pounds:

• AOV: $50 USD ~ £39.80 GBP
• 100 orders per month
• Shopify Payments is used
