What Is Shopcodes?

What is Shopcodes?

Source: Shopify

Shopcodes is Shopify’s native QR code generator – meaning that it’s built specifically for your Shopify store. Thus, there will be no compatibility issues whatsoever. Thus, you can integrate Shopcodes into your store with peace of mind.

Additionally, just like other apps developed by Shopify, Shopcodes is made for a specific purpose, it’s easy to use, and more importantly, it’s 100% free.

It is worth noting that using Shopcodes on your online store is absolutely risk-free as it does not change anything on the structure or appearance of your online store. Furthermore, it neither affects your customers nor does it change your orders.

According to Shopify, you can use scannable QR codes for the following purposes:

  • Inform your customers about your product.
  • Scan the code to check out no matter where they are.
  • Place QR codes around your physical retail store that customers can scan to get more details about your products or view additional variants.
  • Add QR codes to your window display to make it buyable.
  • Add QR codes to your product packaging so your customers can re-order by scanning the code.
  • Add discounts to QR codes to incentivize purchases.

Once generated, scannable QR codes can be downloaded so you can print physical copies of them.

Rating: 2.2 out of 5

Price: Free

Considering that there are a lot of uses for QR codes nowadays, having an online solution like Shopcodes for your online store that you can use for free seems like a very good deal, isn’t it?

However, based on its very low rating of 2.2 out of 5, it looks like most users are not satisfied with it. Does this really tell you that Shopcodes is a bad app?

Well, we’re not simply judging based on ratings here. Let’s give it the benefit of the doubt and see what it really is.

For that, let’s take Shopcodes for a spin to see if it’s up to the task of taking your m-commerce game to the next level.

First Impressions

Let’s see how it is like using Shopcodes in our demo store.

Installation

Installing app codes to your Shopify store is a straightforward manner. Just search for Shopcodes on the Shopify app store and click Install. After that, it will automatically be installed on your store without any further steps.

And that’s exactly what we want because we are just trying to generate a simple QR code.

Fill in the necessary info to create a Shopcode

In the image below, you’ll see that we filled out the necessary spaces to generate a Shopcode:

  1. We created the title of our QR code. In your case, it’s best to be systematic in naming your Shopcodes – especially if you want to generate codes for your individual products. You’ll find this really helpful when you are tracking your analytics later on.
  2. We chose a product for the QR code. Note that this product will be the main destination of your QR code. It could either link to the product page only, or straight to the checkout page with the product in the cart.
  3. Under scan destination, we chose “link to product page”.
  4. And under Discount, we chose not to apply a discount code for simplicity. But if you want to add a discount code for your QR code marketing, you can do so by clicking the “create discount” link on the top-right of the box.
  5. Finally, we checked “include help text in the Shopcode” so that the phrase “Scan to Shop” is shown above the QR code. You uncheck this if you want a plain code without text.

Alternative Way To Create Shopcode

Aside from creating a QR code straight from the app dashboard, there’s another way to create a Shopcode. You can do this from the product dashboard.

On your store admin, click “Products” on the main menu and choose the product that you want to view.

Alternatively, Shopcodes can be made via the product page

And on the product page, click on “More Actions” and choose “Create a Shopcode”.

You can do that by clicking More Actions

After clicking, a pop-up will show and all you have to do is fill out the details like you would from the Shopcode app.

Tracking Your QR Code Conversions

Of course, you need to know if your QR code marketing is indeed working for your business. One way to do that is by tracking the conversions of your individual Shopcodes.

Luckily, doing so is a no-brainer. Simply head on the app dashboard and you’ll see your list of Shopcodes right away.

Tracking your QR code conversions

Albeit not very detailed, the dashboard gives you a report regarding how many times each QR code was scanned as well as purchases through Shopify analytics. Additionally, you can click the “view conversions” link for a more detailed report.

Takeaways

After testing the app, we have some takeaways from it that could either convince you to use it on your Shopify store or to look for another QR code app altogether. Here are some of them:

  • Shopcodes is a very straightforward app. Because of its simplicity, a learning curve for using it is virtually non-existent. You can generate a QR code in just a few minutes.
  • Because Shopcodes is only made to create QR codes for product pages, you cannot create QR codes linking to your other sales channels such as social media or even other parts of your online store.
  • Its Shopify app landing page is plagued with dissatisfied users claiming that the app does not work. However, upon trying it, it worked for us 100% of the time.
  • Integrating discounts to your Shopcodes is very simple. However, you have to first create a discount policy from your admin before you can integrate one on your QR code.
  • Using it presents no risk at all because it does not alter any part of your landing pages. It being free actually sweetens the deal as we personally find it very useful.
